One of my girls has recently developed a condition where one of her eyes is lighter and the other is darker. I am not sure if my eyes are playing tricks on me or if the lighter eye is actually bigger than the darker eye. This girl is a few years old and currently gravid. She has been separated from the male for quite some time and he shows no signs of the condition. I am not sure how long she has had this as I had not inspected her closely in a while, but her last weigh-in was about a month ago at which point I am fairly sure that she was fine. Has anybody ever heard of this happening before? I am going to book an appointment with the local help vet, but I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions?

If you google that I believe I read that on another forum.......... maybe it was on Pangea, I can't remember. You could always send off a message to Dr. Allan, he seems to be very ready to help with his expertise.
Pictures would maybe help for Hilde or Sara (where did she go, oh busy one )
Is she otherwise doing fine? Maintaining her weight? Do I dare ask which girl???

This looks similar to what I am dealing with here, only the dark spot has covered most of the eye. I am not sure if the spot was smaller at one point and I just didn't notice it or what, but it is definately covering the eye now (kicking myself for not paying closer attention to gecko eyes). After reading this repashy post I am inclined to think that the lighter eye is not actually bigger, but normal, meaning that the darker eye is shrunken like described in that above post.

The gecko is Hunter and her weight is perfectly fine. She was 44g at the end of her cooling period (Feb) and she is 45g now. She is active and eating like a pig. I am really starting to worry now that this might be cancer. I would hate for this to be a serious as that as she was one of my first girls and she therefore has a very special place in my heart. I am calling the vet to make an appointment asap. This is really not what I need right now

Good luck with her, if she is acting normal and seems to be not losing weight, I would think that is a great thing. Keep us posted on what you find out.

I really appreciate you posting that Hilde - I thought I remembered your baldy having one dark eye, but I could not find the post (I think I was looking on Pangea). The situation seems to be more or less what Andrew described. Hunter's hatch-date is Nov 2003 (from Sara's herps and raised by Betty since she was a hatchling). I have had her for about a year. My concern was that the condition came on so suddenly. I mean I can see a deformity being present from birth, but the darkened eye at well over 3 years old really worried me. I am glad to hear that someone else experienced this condition at this later age. At this point I just hope she isn't gravid. This is her third year breeding but her first with me. She laid a few duds at the end of her cooling cycle at which point I paired her up but she has not laid anything since then. The male was a first year and my reptile room has been quite cool so I figured it was not her fault she was not gravid but now I am starting to wonder. She has been separated for a while now and I was pretty sure I felt eggs in her a few weeks ago (and she was digging), but no eggs yet. I just checked her now and I am not feeling the eggs (but now I am paranoid and my mind is probably playing tricks on me, lol). I am going to keep her separated as she has been for most of her time with me (she is usually on her own as she has always been easily bullied). She is officially a “pet-only” gecko, not that this really matters as at this point I am getting quite the collection of “pet-onlys”, lol.

Hilde, is the darker eye smaller than the light one on your baldy? I am going to try to get pics of Hunter’s eye to show the size difference. At this point I am just relieved to hear that it might not be cancer. She is such a sweet gecko, I would hate to loose her.

Got a picture. It really shows the colour/size difference. I think the difference in colour make the size difference look more severe, but you get the point.

My male dalmation has a one eye that's darker than the other - it looks like one eye has more reticulation. Just last night I was checking on him and noticed that the darker eye actually looks smaller. There isn't a huge difference, but it's definitely there. He's eating well and seems healthy, but I've only had him for a few months so I can't say how long he's been this way. Let me know if you find out what it is, JayHay. I'm a little worried too.

Any updates? One of my geckos is experiencing the same thing (my thread is a few posts down).

I just wanted to update this thread (even though it is now very old, lol) b/c I still have people messaging me from time to time to find out what was the problem. As it turned out, Hunter (the female in question) had injured the darker eye. All along I was thinking that the larger eye was one with the problem, but it was actually normal (looking back at older pics, I realize now that she always had bulgey eyes, and while this is not a desirable trait, it is perfectly normal). The injured eye darkened up and became quite small. There is actually a scar across the bottom of the eye where the injury was. She does have some sight in the eye, but her hunting was off for a while. It has been a year since the injury and it is completely healed and she had learned how to hunt with her altered vision. She is back up to around 45g and she is doing great. She has move dout of quarentine and back in with some roomates (she was always very social). As I said before, I will not be breeding her, but she is a wonderful pet and she is happy to keep some of my girls company in their off-seasons
